Blog Post for 3/19

Based on the reading we have done this week, what differences and similarities are there between newspaper and magazine features? Be sure to respond to at least two classmates. Try to use examples from our reading or other sources you are aware of.

  1. There are plenty of differences and similarities between newspaper and magazine features. Some of the differences include that newspaper features are much shorter and original than magazine features. They also have very short leads that attract the readers in from the start. These newspaper features are also black and white and do not have to many images, whereas magazine features have more pictures and they are all in color. A similarity between these two would be that they both include human interest and tell us information. They also both include images, whether or not they are in color.

    1. I agree, both do appeal to human interest. At first, I was having trouble coming up with similarities, but those are two excellent points. Also, color or not, both magazines and newspapers call for the reader to look at the image and relate it to the words surrounding it.

    2. I felt the same as far as appealing to human interests also I like how you mention that the general goal of news papers and magazines is to attract readers to the words with headlines and pictures

    3. Human interest was something I highlighted in my post. The big difference is how both newspapers and magazines convey nearly the same information in a different way, based on their audience.

    4. You make great points in this Daniel. I like how you mentioned human interest and the similarities in pictures.

    5. i agree with this
Newpapers= Tell me whats going on
Magaizine - Tell me more of what i just heared

    6. Just adding on to what has already been mentioned...
Newspapers to me are more focused on current events and magazines are primarily read for entertainment, reading about topics i'm already sort of familiar with.

  2. There are many similaraties and differences between newspaper and magazine articles. Both are similar in he sense that both are telling a story. The both inform us of news, but they could be different types of news. Newspapers would have more current stories since it runs everyday a lot of times. Magazine may run monthly so may run different piece, some being more timeless. Newspapers are also shorter in black and white with few images. Magazines are longer, in color with sometimes many images. Newspapers can have short leads, where magazine, leads are longer. Both types are article are not meant for scanning and are meant to read from top to bottom.

    1. I really liked your final point - How both are not meant for scanning but rather, for reading through from top to bottom. Nowadays we can just google a key word, Sparknote a book, and even have the words from the screen read to us. We can just CNTRL + F any word or phrase and it will highlight the exact area and page number within the article or story. I found it interesting that newspapers and articles require us to read from top to bottom but yet, that's how we are supposed to read anyway.

    2. I concur with Pat. Your final point speaks volumes. Technology, such as google has made things so accessable. We scan reguardless of what we are reading, only enforced by the outcomes we seek for, in this case a grade. We choose to stop at what we find interesting and once our mind starts feeling cloudy we either stop reading or continue skimming till something else catches our eye/interest.

  3. There are several differences when comparing a newspaper and magazine. Newspaper articles report local stories on a daily basis. For example, a newspaper like the Boston Globe would not report on something occurring in Florida unless it pertained to something more relevant in the area. This is because those subscribed to the The Boston Globe are particular to the area of Boston, Massachusetts. Additionally, the photos in a newspaper are black and white unless on the cover page. On the contrary, a magazine contains colored photos throughout and it's content is not as relevant to the area, but more to the time. For example, US Weekly sells on the shelf of every register before checkout at Stop & Shop nationwide. These articles are discussing the latest actions taken by well-known celebrities across the country & even the world. Not like a newspaper article discussing the pothole problem on my town's roads. The last difference between the two is the audience or demographic which they write for. Newspapers, in my opinion, are aimed more toward adults & the elderly. I believe this because they grew up reading the paper, much like their parents, and it's seen as a tradition - the thing to do. They receive their typical weather, sports, etc, and it is all they need because it is all they are used to reading. More recently, with the internet and texting, word travels faster. This means that the latest "scoop" happened five minutes ago and there is now something entirely new to read about. From a teen to being a young adult, I am constantly immersed in the "now" , making newspapers irrelevant; a primitive tool of the past.

    1. Very good points, I like how you used specific examples and talked about demographics

    2. I second what Zack said. The specific examples were a lot more distinct than mine. I didn't even realize some of the demographics when I was writing mine.

  4. Magazines and newspapers have many similarities and differences. They both are read for information out of human interests and are done usually on current events, however sometimes certain parts of magazines are not done in a timely manor. Magazine articles tend to be more eye popping with more images and a certain appealing writing style as news papers are sometimes not as appealing to the naked eye and capture the reader using headlines and great writing.

    1. I agree with you. When in a check out line in the grocery store they line the shelves with Tabloid magazines. They are eye catching and Gossipy. They have a way of taking your mind off of your own life and see how the other half live. Or focus on their failures and bad marriages so you can maybe feel better about your own situation. They have the latest fad diets and excersises to get the perfect body. Who wouldn't want to read that? There newspapers are usually on a shelf when your headed out the door. Who has time to stop?

    2. human interest i agree is one of the biggest similarities between these two features. Eye popping is a great word to describe magazines.

  5. Magazines and Newspapers share a lot of similarities, as well as having differences. Nowadays, depending on the paper or magazine, the frequency of their release can vary. Some newspapers come out daily, like the Herald, keeping you up to date as recent as possible. While some smaller newspapers, like local town newspapers, may only come out once a week. Magazines, similarly are often weekly, or even monthly. Very rarely is a magazine daily, although it is a possibility. As well, both magazines and newspapers can feature the most up to date information. Because of the less frequent nature of most magazines, often times the news is some what of a review of the total month, like sports magazines. Daily newspapers cover what happened the day before and what will happen today and that's usually it. Things like obituaries, police blotters, are up to date then changed to fit the next day. Both magazines and newspapers could be local or national or even international, reporting on coverage in their area. However, magazines do have one obvious difference and that is color. Most all magazines are completely in color, while newspapers feature color cover pages, and sometimes color throughout. Also magazines tend to be more specific in their target groups. An entire paper can be written for anyone, while magazines may only focus on moms or kids or teachers etc.

    1. I really liked your last point that magazines can focus on more specific target groups. You can find a magazine for any hobby or interest you have, whereas you wouldn't find that as much in a newspaper.

    2. It is a good point that magazines have a much narrower audience than newspapers. This can completely transform the way an author would compose a piece.

  6. Magazines and newspapers share a lot of similarities and differences. However, I personally believe that the similarities are much more prominent. This is because that the differences are only suited to the readers. Both pieces in each of these styles are written to get information out or a point across. Differences are usually in style or little tweaks to the presentation of the actual information. However, quality can also be contrasted because papers will release stories daily, while often times magazines will release weekly or even monthly. Color is an obvious difference, and current information is an obvious similarity. But the most important thing that distinguish these different information holders, are the people that read them.

    1. I agree with you when you say the similarities are more prominent. The main goal is to inform the reader. The difference in style is just for the pleasure of the reader.

    2. I liked the way you referred to magazine and newspapers as information holders. As that truly sums up their purpose quite well.

  7. The Magazines and Newspaper articles we had to read for the week have many similarities and differences.

There similar because they all are nonfiction articles on current events that appeal human interest that include Images and description.

However Newspapers are more of the tell me quickly whats going on type of writing where magazines are more of the in-depth annalist of whats going on. Magazines include more in depth writing and colored pictures where as newspapers include just scannable brief summarys of whats going on and heres a black and white pic to give you something to inhance what were saying.

    1. I do like a newspaper article because it quickly tells me what I want to know.

  8. Magazines and newspapers have plenty of similarities and differences. For instance the goal of both of them is to share information/facts with the public. They do this by using catchy titles and intriguing photographs. They also both require deep research and need to be fact checked before publishing. If not then you could just be reporting nonsense and you ruin the image of your company. Some differences are the types of stories. Since newspapers report daily, they may go day after day reporting the same story, just with updated details. A magazine is more likely to tell you a complete story. Also, magazines for the most part are usually more tabloid focused. More about pictures and headlines, they 'catch the eye.' There are many differences between the two, but the main goals of both is to report true, interesting stories; all while being successful.

  9. Newspapers can be cold in print. They give us brief descriptions of an accident or death and no compassion for the readers. Although I'm sure the writers do feel sympothy and are compassionate people, they only have a few minutes to get the news out. Magazines similarly cold in the sense that they exploit any celebrity to sell a story. Differences I see are newspapers are mostly local stories concerning the town , city and surrounding areas. Magazines usually cover world happenings. News paper is just print on paper, not a lot of color. Magazines are a glossy finish in all color. I think eventually both will be obsolete with social media taking over.

    1. I agree with the thought that newspapers an be cold in print. The black and white, formal format, and lack of images can seem very impersonal at times.

    2. That is a great point to point out how newspapers are cold in print. I never thought of it that way. The whole celebrities in magazines is also cold, i do agree with you on this.

  10. There are similar features between magazine and newspaper features. Both have a humanistic approach, non-fiction, and both tell a story. A newspaper feature has a shorter lead, usually written in columns, and is black and white with less images. A magazine feature is more flashy. The magazine feature allows for a longer format, more colorful images, and can be a timeless piece. Because newspapers are more frequently published and distributed, it does not have an option to run a piece that is not current day.

  11. Newspaper articles, while delivering stories, do so in a more factual way than magazine features. The tone in a newspaper feature is more serious, composed solely of facts. The magazine feature, however, has a more colorful tone, allowing the author to take a more subjective stance on their topic. The paragraphs and complete article in a newspaper feature is also much shorter than that in a magazine article typically.

  12. Newspapers are more for reading to beginning to the end. While magazine articles are meant to scan through (well it happens that way anyway).
Newspaper articles are generally shorter due to the limited space, formatted in columns, time oriented (the date matters). While magazine articles are meant to be more timeless, story-like writing, longer due to more space given in publication, and images are usually in color.
