Blog Post for 3/5

What is your Talk of the Town example about (include a link to it if you can) and why is it considered a Talk of the Town essay? What do you notice about the writers style? What kind of research does the writer do?

Don't forget to respond to at least one classmate.

  1. I found this article on street art in Brazil:
    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/08/11/magazine/Look_Brazil.html?ref=magazine

It is a slideshow of sorts, which begins discussin on two street artists who began working (illegally) to protest the destruction of nature in favor of big cities. Their art ended up getting much praise and approval and publications but the artists still work (illegally) and their art is influenced by the corruption in Brazil.
There is not much writing... so this may not be the type of photo essay you may be looking for but the author provides information that is interesting, such as, it takes less than 30 minutes to paint a train car before the police take notice.

    1. This seems like a very interesting piece to talk about. I am very interested with the talent of artists and with the thrill of this specific talk, it seems intriguing. I agree that this is a talk of the town example as it clearly is something alot of people are debating and talking about.

  2. and to add: since the art is used to make a public statement, the artwork itself really tells a story and is worth checking out.

  3. In this article:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/01/magazine/building-the-first-slave-museum-in-america.html?ref=magazine

This article discusses how Whitney Cummings had constructed a Slavery museum out of an existing plantation, and the whole event took over fifteen years and 8 million dollars to construct, due to the fact that almost no meuseums of this type exist. It is a talk of the town piece because despite the events not happening in the same state, its big news for the country. The way the author wrote this piece also adds into play, he gave it hints of disgust how there aren't more places like this built. Cummings himself is of Irish descent with little to no connection to slavery, but yet appears as a hero for giving life to this rare museum.

I thought that this Talk of the Town example was particularly interesting. It talks specifically about how the debate on issues regarding school lunch became a "political battleground". This authors style is very factual, but also looks at the entirety of the debate from all angles. The research makes it a great Talk of the Town piece, giving background on everything from actual food being served, to pay wages for the lunch ladies. Very relevant and interesting article.

    http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/4/8149881/netflix-net-neutrality-title-ii-fcc

In a historic decision this week, the FCC passed new regulations for many ISPs. In the above article, featured on the Verge, the author Ben Popper talks about the reaction from Netflix following the title II regulations being passed. Initially it seemed from the quotes of Netflix CFO David Wells that they were having some regrets over initially fully supporting the regulations. It seemed that maybe the FCC had done more than Netflix anticipated, and were trying to pull back some of their support. However, after his first comments, Netflix refixed their position suring up that they were in full support of the FCC.
In this article, the author is clearly objective in his writing. His not trying to prove a point about Netflix, the FCC or anyone involved, but rather just lay out the facts and quotes for the reader to interpret as they choose. As well, this article features a lot of dialogue and quotes, with small amounts of analysis and transitions.

  6. I found an article on Weymouth Evening High School but I don't know how to link it on here. Sorry. It is an inspirational and emotional piece. The writer interviews students and uses a lot of dialog, which I thought was fitting. Each student has their own story as to why they left school and why they returned.

    3. I love this. My mother was not allowed to go to highschool... she went straight to work in a local factory. She put herself through highschool while i myself, was in middle school. I was so naive to what was happening then, but as a mother now, mature enought to understand the hardships it takes to go back and get a degree. I am so proud. Reguardless of the circumstances, people are forced to go back to school and withdraw from school all the time. Some are valid some are not. This article was def. interesting. Great find!

  7. http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/03/09/all-that-jazz-john-seabrook

I found a Talk of the Town article in the New Yorker about the Las Vegas rock band Imagine Dragons. Honestly, I read it because I love the group. This reporter drove with this group to "Fat Cat" a jazz, pool, shuffleboard place. It was the bands night off from promoting their album and they wanted to check the place out.
The writers style was relaxed and easy to read. It gave the reader some background of the band but primarily let the band just talk. The piece gives the reader some insight as to how these guys are personally.
I thought it was a talk of the town article because first it was under the talk of town section in the New Yorker but it also had a local feel to it. These guys talk about where and why they visited certain places.
I thought this was a fun read.

I found this talk of the town example that is happening in a town near mine. The public is invited to join and expert astronomer while he explains the amazing movements of the stars. This is considered a talk of the town example because everyone around the area is excited to go to this event and experience it. I notice that the writers style is very descriptive. For example he/she tells us that the viewers will be ready to head to their warm homes after the very chilly night. The writer does research on not only the event times and what is happening, but they are providing what to bring and what will be provided for you.

  9. http://www.inquisitr.com/1882654/michelle-carter-conrad-roy-iii-case-girl-charged-in-friends-suicide-egged-him-on/

The example that I have started off as a talk of the town piece but then became the talk of the nation. A kid by the name of Conrad Roy III that I went to high school with, committed suicide in July of 2014. It was a very sad time for the three towns that attended this high school; Rochester, where I'm from, Mattapoisett, where he was from and Marion. However, the story got even more traumatic when news came out that a girl he had told about his suicidal thoughts didn't help him out or even seek help. She egged him on to kill himself and eventually texted him all the way up to his last moments being alive. This story spread like wildfire on social media and has articles written about it in almost every state. The girl who helped assist in the suicide is currently on trial for wether she will be charged with manslaughter or not. The writer in this article is giving the facts of what happened but I feel like they are trying to make the girl look guilty just in the way it is written. The writer researched quotes from the police on scene who found the phone and read the text. The writer then put those quotes in the article which helped understand the facts of the story.

This talk of the town article was featured on The New Yorker. I found it interesting because I had known that Greece was in financial crisis but I did not know it was going so bad that they were considering leaving the Euro. I personally think after reading the article that leaving the Euro is their best option, much like how Argentina denounced the peso.

    1. I remember talking about this in class with you. It intrigued me since its not something i would normally pick up and read. I even picked your brain on the matter. Seeing history develop in front of your eyes vs. reading old facts in a history textbook is fun. We get to observe and learn first hand in the present and see how neighboring countries change and adapt to the economy.
