For my profile paper I have decided to pick my boss from home, Rick Coleman. For the past three summers, I have been able to work at the New Seabury driving range and golf course, with Ricky being my primary boss. Ricky has been a family friend since I can remember, my father being friends with him from years now. After spending a bunch of summers together now I've learned a lot about Ricky. He grew up on the Cape, started washing dishes in NS where he now is the head golf instructor. He started his college in Mass. playing hockey, but was offered a gold scholarship in Florida where he ended up traveling the world to play golf. Years later, he now lives in Sandwich and owns his own clothing company, Magic Wear. Just recently he opened up a store featuring his clothing, but it has been a dream in the making for many more years. When he is not teaching golf, in the offseason he's sitting front row with my father and their buddies at Bruins games, courtesy of his friend Andy Brickley. Ricky has some friends in high places, and has been all over the world to play golf, which to me makes him a highly interesting man. But I really want to know more about how Ricky has made these relationships, where the idea for Magic Wear came, and hear about the journey his life has been. I figured I might as well figure out some more about a guy who I spend hours with each day during the summer.

    1. I also play golf so I can connect to this personally. Golf is not only fun to play, but it is also very popular among people in "high places" and is used socially to seal deals and make connections. I think that this is a great choice.

    4. This sounds like a really interesting guy. You will have to figure what your focus will be, Golf instructor? clothing business? Travel?

    5. This guy sounds really interesting and also the fact he's been around the world with some rich and famous people makes me think he's got some good tales to tell.

Mary Shinkwin is the person I have chosen to write my profile paper about. She is an aunt who has been a huge part of my life since the day that I was born. Like myself, I know that as a college student she switched her major time and time again. It wasn't until 30 that she knew what exactly what she wanted to do. Despite her indecisiveness when it came to her college education, she turned out to be a very successful women, who also loves what she does. Not only is she smart with a dollar bill, but she is one of the most positive, kind, and thoughtful people I know. As well as I know my auntie Mary, I'd like to learn more about choices she made along the way that got her to where she is today.

    1. That sounds like it would be an interesting profile. A lot of people including myself can connect to changing majors countless times and not figuring out what you want to do until later in life.

  3. I`m still having a hard time deciding on witch person to write about but if i had to choose one at this very moment it would be 4 for 4 hitting instructor and well respected baseball coach Bob Boutin, who i also work for.

Like myself he has a passion and an uppession with the game of baseball except maybe even greater than myself. He has also been through alot in his life and i feel it would be a very interesting blog.

For my profile piece I have decided to write about my Sensei Alison Thurston. Alison teaches adults and children Karate, Brazilian Ju Jitsu and runs a sports conditioning class. She has a black belt in Karate and a Purple belt in ju jitsu. She also graduated from Springfield college with a degree related to sports education. She motivates me in all her classes and pushes me to always strive harder. One of her common phrases she says to motivate her students is "train like a champion." Alison is a very successful women whom I look up to a great deal. She loves what she does and always has a postive attitude. She's managed to have a family and run a business with her husband. I'd really like to learn how Alison got to where she is today and how she kept motivated to never give up.

    1. Your profile piece sounds very interesting. It will be great to know what her motivating factors were and how she managed to juggle the business, children, husband, and home.

    2. I also think this is interesting because she is a woman in that role. In my experience it tends to be dominated by men.

  5. For my Profile, I have chosen an old friend, Joe. We have not spoken to one another in quite some time. To start, Joe was a sociable person, always able to hop into conversation and explain his view on the topic with ease. He lived at URI during his freshman year at college and greatly enjoyed it. As both, family and financial issues began to arise, Joe made the decision to stay with his family & commute from home. If only I had known that his decision would drastically affect the person he is today. I chose this person because it would be interesting to get back in touch with him and see how he is doing. As for what I hope to gain from this or accomplish, a more in-depth understanding on stress and and how it effects our mental health.

  6. For my essay, I have decided to profile my professor and advisor, Dr. James E. Leone. Dr. Leone is an Associate Professor of Health in the Department of Movement Arts, Health Studies, and Leisure Studies at Bridgewater State University. The reason I picked Dr. Leone is because I am a health studies major and am interested in research and male health. Dr. Leone is an active researcher and an advocate for male health and body image disorders. He has published a textbook named Concepts in Male Health: Perspectives Across the Lifespan and has published numerous peer-reviewed scholarly articles on various health topics. He is involved in many health organizations that contribute to the health community. My main objective is to find out why Dr. Leone decided to concentrate so much on male health research and advocacy. I would also like to know what his aspirations for the future of male health and promotion.

    1. Carla,
Dr. Leone sounds like a great subject for a profile piece. It will be beneficial that his career has been based in your field, so it will be more enjoyable for you to write. It would be interesting to know what set him in that path of male health, if it was perhaps a past experience or an ill family member. It could be interesting to ask him if he always saw himself being a professor and author, or what his childhood self saw himself becoming as an adult. Good luck!

    2. Excellent. It is always great to get to know your professors beyond their teaching.

  8. I have decided to write my profile piece based on a man I have known for nearly ten years as “Greg from R&L”. My parents own and operate a company that imports and sells specialized hinges and other hardware products, and since I was thirteen I have done some occasional clerical work at the office. Greg has been making deliveries to BAHCO (Boston Architectural Hinge Company) for as long as I can recall. Although I cannot speak for him, as I do not know him on a very personal level, he seems to enjoy delivering for R&L Carriers. Greg has become a friend to my parents, always coming into the office to say hello after a delivery. Whenever I have seen him, he has greeted me with a warm “Hey Carly”, a smile and occasionally a high five. I think he could make a really great subject to interview and write about. I am sure that as a deliveryman of ten or more years he has some interesting stories to share of experiences he has had on the job. I would also like to know how many hours a week he spends driving the truck and making deliveries, what he likes and dislikes about his job, and what his life is like off the road. Greg is always good for a good laugh too, so I think he could provide me with some captivating material to construct a profile.

    1. I like your topic because it is someone entirely unexpected. It is interesting that you've known him approximately 7 years and yet, you really don't know him at all. This is an excellent choice because it avoids the "typical choice" i.e. a close friend or family member.

    2. I bet he has a lot of interesting stories from his travels.

  9. I have decided to write my profile essay on an aquaintence of mine named Adam. Adam is a married father of two working a 9-5 desk job who has taken up make-up as a hobby. Adam has begun to make a name for himself within our local town. Hes primarily worked on brides in the New Englad area and has recently been awared with a couples' choice award on WeddingWire.com. His work has also been featured in the Southern New England Weddings magazine. I have even hired him as my make-up artist for my upcoming wedding.
What I'd really like to dig in is the fact that he is a STRAIGHT male working a job that is primarily filled by females and gay men. This is coming from the men that both me and Adam are affiliated with. I'd like to get some insight on how this hobby/second job has transpired and how his wife and friends have supported him or have not supported him. Modern day gender roles at its finest.

    1. I love the fact that he is a man pushing his way into a womens industry, especially seeing he is a dad with a 9-5 job.

    2. I would love to know how he got his start. I love doing makeup and hair. It's a fun and creative. An artistic outlet. I personally think most men are better at it than women.

  10. My profile is on not one but two friends of mine. Reason being is they are brothers and they are co dependent drug addicts. I could not interview one without the other. They are inseparable and sadly dysfunctional. I've known them for close to 30 years. They have used drugs the entire time. They've only survived because of eachother but they need to realize they are also killing eachother. I hope I can help in some way or just make people aware of the horrible and negative ways drugs effects lives.

  11. My profile piece is about one of my best friend's mother. Molly McGlaughin is a colonel in the United States Army. All of us, and by us I mean her son's friends, call her colonel. She is one of the nicest, easy going, yet toughest people I have ever met in my life. She has basically been a second mother to me growing up, seeing as I spend a lot of time at her house. I was in the sixth grade the first time I met colonel. She had just gotten home from Iraq and I had befriended her son when she was away. Me and Josh, her son, had gone to the local YMCA and she had picked us up. Josh and I were in the back seat when she thought she had heard me swear. Even though full disclosure I hadn't. Anyway she slammed on the breaks, turned around and yelled at me, "Did you just swear in my car?" Now I had only swore once in my life and that was during a game of football at recess because I felt it was necessary. So I was shaking scared because I was a pretty innocent kid. I told her I hadn't swore and she made it clear I never would be allow to swear around her. Well, not exactly because with all Josh's friends over his house all the time you would think you were with a bunch of sailors. The point is Colonel is a strong independent woman who I am lucky to be around a lot of the time. The truth is though I don't know her whole story when I actually am really interested in it. Like how did she know she wanted to be in the Army? What was it like overseas? Do you have any regrets? And am I your son's favorite friend?

  12. I think this is quite similar to my profile choice... in terms of gender roles. You have a female working in a male-dominated field. I would love to know more about how she was treated by her colleagues. IF she had to stand her ground much, or at all. If she has trouble turning off her army persona when she goes home and plays her other role as a mother.... great direction though!

  13. I have just finished my interview on Adam C... A husband, father of two, working a 9-5 job at a construction company, and owns his own makeup application business. My direction was to discuss the gender roles placed on him by society and by his peers. I am currently trying to dissect all the information I recieved. I didn't anticipate Adam to go into such detail on A question I posed in my written interview. But I got more than I can chew. I hope I can portray in a positive light, and as the passionate, energetic individual that I know he is.
